Liles Farms Farm to Table Project - 2020

In late spring of 2020 at the height of the COVID 19 pandemic, area farmer Sheri Liles suffered an injury that made it impossible for her to tend and harvest her large raised bed gardens.  Ms. Liles friend, Marilyn Finley, had an idea to enlist the aid of volunteers to tend the gardens and donate the vegetables to area food banks.   They contacted our own Blount County Master Gardener, Louminda Torbett,  who developed, presented and received approval for the Liles Farm to Table 2020 Project.

Ten Master Gardeners and ten community members  worked together, usually on four person teams, on a rotating three day a week schedule that allowed us to social distance from June through October. 

The Master Gardeners shared training and experience and Sheri Liles shared her expertise in organic gardening.

Working together, over 1,400 pounds of produce were donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, the Welcome Table and The Community Food Connection of Blount County.  The produce included several varieties of squash, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes and apples.
